What is a Parti Poodle?
The Poodle is believed by many breed historians to have originated in Germany as a water retriever (from the German word pudel, meaning "to splash"), though it was later refined and adored by French nobility. A Parti Poodle is a purebred Poodle with a specific coat pattern: it must have a base coat that is more than 50% white, with patches of a secondary solid color appearing across the body. Because these patches manifest in unpredictable, unique locations, no two Parti Poodles look exactly alike.
AKC Recognition & Showing
There is a common misconception that Parti Poodles are "hybrids" or not purebred. Parti Poodles are 100% purebred Poodles.
Historically, major kennel clubs favored solid-colored coats (like solid black, white, or apricot) and disqualified multi-colored Poodles from conformation showing rings. However, the American Kennel Club (AKC) fully registers Parti Poodles. While they cannot compete in conformation beauty shows, they are fully allowed to compete in AKC performance events, including:

Meanwhile, the United Kennel Club (UKC)—the second-largest kennel organization in the United States—has officially allowed Parti Poodles to compete in conformation championship events for decades.
Common and Rare Parti Poodle Colors
A true Parti Poodle pairs a white base coat with any AKC-accepted Poodle color. The secondary patches can include: Black, Apricot & Red (which is more rare), Cream, Café au Lait, Silver Beige, Brown, Gray, Blue, or Silver.
When Parti Poodles are puppies, their coat color intensity can shift. As the puppy matures into adulthood and their adult coat grows in, some colors may undergo "clearing" or fading into lighter shades.
The Genetics Behind the Pattern: The S Locus
The striking look of a Parti Poodle comes down to a single genetic driver: the S Locus, also known as the White Spotting or Piebald locus.
To exhibit a true parti coat, a puppy must inherit two copies of the piebald allele, resulting in the sp/sp genotype.
The sp/sp Genetic Rule: A Poodle carrying two copies of the sp allele will always display a nearly solid white base with colored patches. Because they carry two copies, an sp/sp parent will pass on a copy of the piebald gene to 100% of their offspring.

Ticking on Poodles
Ticking refers to tiny spots or flecks of color that develop inside the white areas of a Poodle's coat as they age. Because heavy ticking can sometimes look like "dirt" and mask the clean, crisp contrast of the parti pattern, many selective breeders prefer to breed lines with minimal ticking.
The History and Modern Resurgence
Contrary to popular belief, multi-colored Poodles are not a new trend. Historical European art from the 1400s through the 1800s frequently depicts structural, multi-colored Poodles alongside nobility. In fact, the very first dog book published in the United States highlighted multi-colored Poodles.
However, during the early 20th century, fashion trends shifted toward uniform, solid-colored coats. As kennel clubs restricted multi-colors, breeders stopped registering them, causing a steep decline.
Today, the Parti Poodle is enjoying a massive modern resurgence. Groups began recognizing them and allowing participation in shows. People began to look past old ways of thinking and accept the Parti Poodle for what they are, a beautiful, healthy companion and friend.
Health, Size, and Temperament
Size and Lifespan
Parti Poodles share the exact same structural traits, sizes, and average lifespan (12 to 15 years) as solid Poodles:
Standard: 18–24+ inches tall; 45–70 lbs.
Miniature: 11–15 inches tall; 10–20 lbs.
Toy: Up to 10 inches tall; 4–6 lbs.
Poodles in the range between Miniature and Standard are considered small standards and are also called "Moyen" sized by some.

Parti Poodles are renowned for being exceptionally intelligent, highly trainable, and eager to please. Their calm, intuitive demeanors make them elite candidates for therapy and service work, while their athletic heritage makes them amazing family companions for busier households with children.
Hypoallergenic Coat Care
Because they possess a single-layer, non-shedding hair coat, Parti Poodles are excellent for allergy sufferers. However, their gorgeous curls require consistent maintenance. You can expect needing to brush them regularly to prevent matting, schedule professional grooming every 4 to 6 weeks, and keep their ears clean and nails trimmed.
How Much Do Parti Poodles Cost?
On average, a well-bred Parti Poodle from an ethical breeder costs between $1,500 and $5,000. Prices vary based on size, geographic location, and the rarity of the coat combination (such as a Tri-Color or Merle Parti).
