Understanding CDDY with IVDD -The Standard Poodle Version

Growing up in a family that has raised Poodles for over 20 years, I learned early on that a puppy’s beautiful markings and sweet personality are only half the picture—true quality starts from the inside out.
That is why we place such a strong focus on comprehensive genetic health screenings before any dog enters our breeding program. Today, I want to explain two unknown acronyms you might spot on genetic health reports: CDDY and IVDD. We'll explain what they mean and why proactive testing is everything when it comes to producing our healthy, sweet standard parti poodle puppies.
The Key to Understanding CDDY with IVDD
While they sound like complex medical jargon, these two terms are actually a cause-and-effect pair. One is an inherited genetic trait (the blueprint), and the other is a physical health condition (the potential result) that can come from it down the road.
CDDY: Chondrodystrophy (The Genetic Trait)
CDDY, or chondrodystrophy, is a genetic mutation that alters bone and cartilage development. Specifically, it causes a shortening of the long bones in a dog's legs and leads to premature degeneration of the intervertebral discs in the spine.
In some dog breeds, like Dachshunds, Corgis, and Basset Hounds, this short-legged trait is a defining characteristic of the breed standard. However, in other breeds—such as Poodles, Doodles, and Spaniels—it is an inherited trait that can appear unexpectedly. CDDY is a dominant trait, meaning a dog only needs to inherit one copy of the gene from one parent to express the short-legged phenotype and potentially experience disc issues.
IVDD: Intervertebral Disc Disease (The Condition)
IVDD, or intervertebral disc disease, is a structural condition where the cushioning discs between the spinal vertebrae become brittle, bulge, or completely rupture.
To understand this, think of a healthy canine spine like a string of pearls separated by soft, jelly-filled donuts. These "donuts" absorb shocks when a dog runs, leaps, twists, and plays. In a normal dog, these discs remain soft and pliable until old age. However, in a dog with the CDDY mutation, these discs begin to lose their moisture and harden prematurely (calcify)—sometimes before the puppy even reaches their first birthday. Because the discs become hard and brittle like chalk rather than spongy like rubber, they lose their elasticity and are highly prone to slipping or bursting under everyday stress.
The Stages and Warning Signs of IVDD
When a brittle disc loses its cushion, sudden movements—like leaping off a high couch, launching out of a car, or even a rough-and-tumble play session—can cause the disc material to herniate. This means the hardened "jelly" breaks through its outer ring and presses directly up into the spinal cord, causing severe pain and nerve damage.
IVDD typically progresses through stages, and knowing what to look for can save your puppy from prolonged discomfort:
Mild Discomfort (Stage 1): The dog might show minor pain, hold their head low, or shrug away when you touch their back. They might whimper when picked up.
Moderate Pain & Stiff Moving (Stage 2-3): You might notice a hunched or arched back, trembling or shivering (a major sign of canine pain), reluctance to climb stairs, or a sudden loss of appetite because it hurts too much to bend down to a food bowl.
Incoordination (Stage 4): The dog begins to exhibit weakness or "wobbliness" in the hind legs, often called "drunk walking" or knuckling over (walking on the tops of their paws).
Loss of Function (Stage 5): In severe, acute cases, a sudden rupture can lead to a complete inability to stand or move the back legs, requiring emergency veterinary intervention.
Why We Test: Building a Healthy Future Before Birth
Because CDDY is an inherited genetic trait, we don't have to guess at our puppies' futures. We can completely map it out using advanced DNA testing before our dogs ever become parents. This gives us the ultimate guide for our breeding program.

Tips to Protect Your Puppy’s Back at Home
Genetics lay the foundation, but environmental care keeps your puppy thriving! The overwhelming majority (85% or more) of dogs with one copy of the gene live their entire lives completely happy, active, and entirely free of back pain. Whether that genetic risk turns into a physical problem depends heavily on secondary factors: the dog's overall skeletal structure, their daily activity levels, and—most importantly—keeping them at a lean, healthy weight! Even if a puppy has clear genetics with no copies of CDDY, proper physical care prevents everyday wear-and-tear injury. Here are a few simple ways you can safeguard your puppy's spine as they grow from a baby into a mature adult:
1. Invest in Pet Ramps or Steps
Puppies love to follow you everywhere, which often means launching themselves off high beds or couches. The repetitive impact of landing on hard floors puts immense stress on their front shoulders and spine. Placing pet ramps or soft steps next to your furniture protects their joints from these high-impact landings.
2. Switch to a Supportive Harness
For daily walks and training sessions, pass over the traditional neck collar and opt for a supportive, Y-shaped chest harness. If a puppy lunges or pulls on a leash attached to a collar, all that force is concentrated directly onto their delicate cervical spine (neck). A harness distributes pull forces evenly across the sturdy ribcage.
3. Keep Their Weight in Check
Extra pounds mean extra gravity pulling down on a dog's spinal column. Keeping your pup lean through high-quality, measured meals and consistent, low-impact exercise is one of the single most effective preventative measures you can take. You should always be able to easily feel your dog’s ribs and see a distinct waistline from above.
How does CDDY affect the Standard Poodle?
How a copy of CDDY with IVDD might affect your Standard Poodle puppy is not very well understood today. It is common for families to want to lean away from choosing a puppy if a genetic report shows a parent has a copy of the CDDY gene. It can be a scary sounding result. But here is the most important takeaway: a genetic risk factor is not a medical diagnosis. Although one of our dads carries a copy of CDDY, we have never known a puppy to develop IVDD in all our years raising and improving the Poodle as a breed. Following is the explanation why our puppies are great choices for a happy, healthy, IVDD-free companions.
1. CDDY is Rare in Standard Poodles
The first piece of the puzzle is purely statistical. While the CDDY gene mutation is incredibly widespread in smaller Poodles—affecting roughly 57% to 61% of Toy and Miniature Poodles—it is exceptionally rare in Standard Poodles.
Genetic data from research institutions like UC Davis shows that less than 6% of Standard Poodles carry the CDDY mutation. When it does appear in a Standard, it is typically a remnant of a small-poodle ancestor somewhere deep in the pedigree line. Because the gene is so uncommon in the Standard gene pool, the baseline occurrence of the disease in the breed is already incredibly low.
2. Conformation and Physics (The Big Difference)
Even if a Standard Poodle does inherit a copy of the CDDY gene, their physical structure acts as a massive shield against developing the condition.
IVDD is a complex, multifactorial disease with many triggers. The gene mutation causes the early hardening of the spinal discs, but mechanical stress is what triggers those hardened discs to actually rupture.
Miniature Poodles: Are much closer to the ground, often have more elongated bodies relative to their leg length, and experience much higher relative impact force on their spine when leaping onto furniture or navigating a human-sized world.
Standard Poodles: Possess a square, proportional, long-legged conformation. Their long, athletic legs absorb shock beautifully, taking immense physical stress off the spinal column. Even if their discs are slightly less pliable due to a copy of CDDY, the daily mechanical strain on a Standard's spine is drastically lower.
3. Incomplete Penetrance: Risk vs. Certainty
As mentioned in our blog post, CDDY has incomplete penetrance for IVDD. It is a risk factor, not a guarantee. We also mentioned earlier that IVDD has many different triggers, one of which is known to be CDDY. There are many different factors that can cause IVDD, which is still a subject of much study.
Think of it like a human having a genetic predisposition to high cholesterol. Having the gene doesn't mean you will absolutely have a heart attack; it just means your baseline risk is higher than someone without the gene. Across all breeds, the vast majority (85% to 97%) of dogs with one copy of CDDY live their entire lives completely sound, healthy, and entirely free of back pain.
When you combine that high rate of healthy carriers with the superior, long-legged structural conformation of a Standard Poodle, the chances of a one-copy puppy ever showing clinical symptoms drops to nearly zero. You are seeing the benefits of excellent structure, great management, and the natural resilience of the Standard Poodle body type!
